Ah, the Norinco JW25A ! A little marvel that I've had the pleasure of handling many times in my gunsmith's shop. This hand-repeating rifle in .22 Long Rifle calibre is a real gem for sports shooting enthusiasts and lovers of historic weapons. Let me tell you more about this little gem, which is sure to win you over.
Technical specifications of the Norinco JW25A
The JW25A is a faithful copy of the famous Mauser 98k, but in a more affordable and less powerful calibre. Here are its main features:
- Calibre: .22 Long Rifle
- Total length: 97 cm
- Barrel length: 53 cm
- Weight: 3.3 kg
- Magazine capacity: 5 shots
I've always been impressed by the build quality of this gun, especially given its attractive price. The wooden stock is particularly attractive, faithfully reproducing the design of the Mauser 98. One small detail that I particularly like is the hole in the stock that allows the shoulder strap to be attached to the side, as on the original.
Sighting system and accessories
The JW25A is equipped with adjustable front sight drift and a removable tunnel, as well as a height-adjustable tilting rear sight. For optics enthusiasts, there is an 11mm rail for mounting a scope. The safety is located on the trigger guard, making handling quick and intuitive.
Versatility and uses
This rifle is really versatile. I often recommend it to my customers for a variety of uses:
- Shooting with regulation weapons (TAR)
- Historical reconstructions
- Recreational shooting
- Pest control
- Shooting sports
Its precision and manoeuvrability make it an excellent introductory or advanced weapon.

Legal and practical considerations
It is important to note that Norinco JW25A is classified as category C. This means that you will need a valid hunting licence or shooting licence to acquire it. It's a formality that I regularly guide my customers through, and believe me, it's worth it!
A word of friendly advice: remember to check local regulations on the use of this weapon. Some municipalities may have specific restrictions on the use of firearms, even for sport shooting.
Shooting fun with the JW25A
I still remember the first time I shot a JW25A. I was impressed by its accuracy and shooting comfort. The low recoil of the .22 LR calibre combined with the ergonomics inherited from the Mauser 98k made it a really pleasant weapon to use.
Maintenance and durability
Like all quality firearms, the JW25A requires regular maintenance to maintain its performance. I always recommend that my customers thoroughly clean the barrel after each shooting session and regularly check that all moving parts are in good working order. With the right care, this rifle will be with you for many years.

A nice little rifle with a number of qualities. That said, the comments about it are a little too eulogistic, overlooking the manufacturing faults on some models: difficulty or impossibility of inserting and removing the magazine, sighting instruments that are unreliable and "float". Their settings can be totally different from one model to another, and so on. The adjustment work remains rustic. The strong point is the quality of the barrel. Having said that, by remedying the shortcomings noted with a little 'tinkering', this Norinko remains an endearing gun thanks to its 'look', its low price and the quality of its barrel, which enables it to achieve very respectable scores.
